Getting care in Brooklyn

New York City’s most populous borough, with the largest number of federally designated Medicaid-eligible shortage areas in the state and a mix of public, safety-net and academic hospitals.

Brooklyn has strong hospitals but thin everyday primary care in many neighborhoods: federal data flags Bedford-Stuyvesant, Bushwick, Bensonhurst, Borough Park, Coney Island, East Flatbush and East New York as shortage areas for Medicaid-eligible residents. If finding a clinician who takes your plan has meant weeks of calls, a video visit is one practical option. Charles Wade, FNP-BC, provides primary care, mental health and ADHD care, weight management, urgent concerns, skin problems and care for children five and older by video, then routes any orders to a Brooklyn lab, imaging center or pharmacy. You need to be in New York during the visit. Community health centers listed on this page remain good options if you want ongoing in-person care near home.

Access in Kings County (borough of Brooklyn), New York City

An estimated 57.0% of Kings County residents were enrolled in Medicaid (June 2015 to May 2016, United Hospital Fund), second only to the Bronx in New York State. HRSA’s current data lists more designated primary care shortage areas in Kings County than in any other New York county. Transit: subway and bus coverage is broad, but southern and eastern neighborhoods can be 45 minutes or more from the borough’s trauma centers.

Who this helps most in Brooklyn

Telehealth helps Brooklyn residents who work irregular hours, care for children or older relatives, or live in a neighborhood where the nearest Medicaid-accepting clinic is full. It also suits people who want ADHD, anxiety or depression follow-up without a long trip. Go in person instead when you need a hands-on exam, a procedure or vaccines, and treat chest pain, trouble breathing, sudden weakness, high fever in a young child or thoughts of self-harm as emergencies: call 911 or go to the nearest ED, such as Kings County, NYU Langone Brooklyn, Maimonides, Brookdale or Woodhull. Children with serious injuries are best served at Maimonides Children’s Hospital, the borough’s pediatric trauma center.
