Good to know

Services, screening recommendations, testing, treatment options, referrals and prescribing may vary with your age, medical history, symptoms, where you are physically located at the time of the visit, state and federal requirements, insurance requirements, and whether your condition can be safely managed by telehealth. Conditions and services listed here are examples. An appointment does not guarantee a particular diagnosis, a prescription, a controlled medication, hormone therapy, a lab order, an imaging study, a sleep study, a specialist referral, an accommodation letter or a particular treatment. Treatment decisions follow a clinical evaluation and the provider’s judgment.

Getting care in Albany

New York’s capital city, served by Albany Medical Center, the Capital Region’s only Level 1 adult and pediatric trauma center, and St. Peter’s Hospital, with a regional insurer (CDPHP) as the largest Medicaid plan.

Albany is better supplied with clinicians than most of upstate New York, and federal data does not flag it as a shortage area, but that does not mean you can see someone this month. State workers, students and families in the Capital Region still wait for primary care and mental health appointments, and winter commutes on I-87 and I-90 eat time. A video visit with Charles Wade, FNP-BC, covers primary care, mental health and ADHD, weight management, urgent concerns, dermatology, men’s and women’s health, children five and older, and geriatric and sleep care. Orders are sent to an Albany-area lab, imaging center or pharmacy you select. You must be physically in New York during the visit.

Access in Albany County (city of Albany; Capital Region)

HRSA’s current data shows no geographic or population-based primary care or mental health HPSA in Albany County, only facility-based (FQHC) designations. Medicaid enrollment was about 26.8% of county residents in 2015-16. Healthy Capital District Initiative coordinates coverage enrollment help and a 2025 Capital Region Community Health Needs Assessment across Albany, Columbia, Greene, Rensselaer, Saratoga and Schenectady counties.

Who this helps most in Albany

Telehealth fits Capital Region residents with office jobs that make daytime appointments hard, parents who cannot leave work for a child’s rash or ADHD check-in, and older adults in Delmar, Guilderland or Colonie who prefer not to drive in winter. It is also useful if you recently lost Essential Plan coverage and need to sort out care while you change plans. It is not for emergencies: chest pain, stroke symptoms, serious injury, severe breathing trouble or a mental health crisis require 911 or the ED at Albany Medical Center or St. Peter’s, with children’s emergencies at Albany Med’s Massry Family Children’s Emergency Center. Procedures, vaccines and hands-on exams need an in-person clinic.
