Good to know

Services, screening recommendations, testing, treatment options, referrals and prescribing may vary with your age, medical history, symptoms, where you are physically located at the time of the visit, state and federal requirements, insurance requirements, and whether your condition can be safely managed by telehealth. Conditions and services listed here are examples. An appointment does not guarantee a particular diagnosis, a prescription, a controlled medication, hormone therapy, a lab order, an imaging study, a sleep study, a specialist referral, an accommodation letter or a particular treatment. Treatment decisions follow a clinical evaluation and the provider’s judgment.

Getting care in Sparks

Reno’s neighbor to the east at about 4,400 feet, with a rail-and-warehouse industrial base and fast-growing suburbs toward Spanish Springs.

Sparks has its own hospital and a growing set of clinics, but many residents still drive into Reno for a doctor, and new-patient waits stretch across the whole Truckee Meadows. A video visit with Wade’s Care First lets you handle routine primary care, prescription refills and adjustments, ADHD and mental health follow-up, weight management, and skin or sleep concerns from home in Spanish Springs or a lunch break at a Vista Boulevard warehouse.

Appointments are scheduled around your shifts rather than clinic hours. The practice is telehealth only and has no Sparks office; lab orders, imaging referrals and prescriptions are directed to Sparks or Reno facilities you choose, and you only go in person for the parts that truly require it.

Access in Washoe County

Sparks relies on Washoe County’s physician supply (21.7 percent of the state’s active physicians) and on Reno’s hospitals for specialty and trauma care. Nevada’s 2025 UNR Med physician workforce report finds the state would need 2,303 more physicians to reach the national per-capita average, including 251 family medicine doctors, 411 pediatricians and 105 psychiatrists; in 35 of 37 AMA specialty areas Nevada is below the national rate, and psychiatrists number 8.7 per 100,000 versus 12.2 nationally.

UNR Med reporting has placed Nevada 45th among states for active physicians and 48th for primary care physicians per capita. About 64.9 percent of Nevadans live in a federally designated primary care HPSA and 91.3 percent live in a mental health HPSA (15 of 17 counties are single-county mental health HPSAs). The state Primary Care Office notes all 17 counties carry some shortage designation; in cities a key driver is that many providers do not accept Medicaid, and in rural and frontier areas travel time to a provider can be several hours. Nevada’s uninsured rate was 11.4 percent in 2024 (47th of 50 states; US 8.2 percent).

Who this helps most in Sparks

This works well for Sparks residents on rotating shifts at warehouses, rail yards, casinos or hospitals, parents in Spanish Springs who want a pediatric visit for a child five or older without a trip across town, older adults managing several daily medications, and anyone who has put off care because getting a Reno appointment felt like a project. If you lack insurance, you will know the cost first.

Telehealth is not for emergencies. Call 911 or go to Northern Nevada Medical Center’s emergency department, or to Renown Regional or Saint Mary’s in Reno, for chest pain, stroke signs, severe breathing trouble, significant injury or a mental health crisis. During smoke events, anyone with asthma or COPD who is not improving with their inhaler should be seen in person.

Local health considerations

  • Wildfire smoke: Northern Nevada Public Health monitors Washoe County air quality; smoke’s fine particles can aggravate asthma, COPD and heart disease, and older adults and children are more vulnerable.
  • Warehouse, rail and casino shift work: Sparks’ industrial base and the Reno metro’s 24-hour hospitality sector (about 14.6 percent of jobs in August 2026) mean many residents work nights; NIOSH ties short sleep to obesity and chronic illness.
  • Elevation about 4,400 feet with cold, dry winters; dry air and inversions can worsen respiratory and skin conditions.
