The Upper Peninsula’s largest city and regional medical center on Lake Superior, serving patients from across the peninsula, with a single Medicaid health plan and long distances to the next lab or hospital.
Marquette is the Upper Peninsula’s medical center, anchored by UP Health System-Marquette, a 222-bed Level II trauma center that receives patients from across the peninsula. Being the regional hub does not mean quick routine access: the local federally qualified health center carries a mental health shortage score of 19, about one in five county residents is 65 or older, and the UP has a single Medicaid health plan.
A video visit with Charles Wade, FNP-BC, covers primary care, mental health, ADHD, weight management, dermatology and minor illness without a drive into town. He orders labs and imaging to be done in Marquette and sends prescriptions to your pharmacy. Upper Great Lakes Family Health Center’s Marquette clinic offers in-person sliding-fee care.
Upper Great Lakes Family Health Center is an FQHC HPSA with a mental health score of 19 (primary care 9); Marquette Tribal Community Health Center and Marquette Branch Prison also hold designations. ACS 2024 5-year: 20.3% of Marquette County residents are 65 or older; 7.7% of county households have no internet subscription (83.6% of city households have broadband); 3.4% uninsured. Upper Peninsula Health Plan is the only Medicaid health plan listed for Marquette County and the rest of the UP. Local collection options are available through UP Health System; confirm the appropriate site for the ordered test.
This fits Marquette County residents who want steady care for blood pressure, diabetes, depression, anxiety, ADHD, sleep or weight without rearranging a workday around a drive, students and seasonal workers who need a prescriber while away from home, and older adults in outlying towns such as Gwinn or Sawyer. About 8 percent of county households lack an internet subscription, so a wired or strong mobile connection matters for video.
Go in person for physical exams, vaccines, procedures and anything that must be felt or listened to. For chest pain, stroke symptoms, severe injury, breathing trouble or a mental health crisis, call 911 or go to UP Health System-Marquette’s emergency room.
Medicaid: Michigan Medicaid is administered by the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS). Most beneficiaries are enrolled in managed care through the Comprehensive Health Care Program (CHCP); MDHHS posts the FY2026 CHCP contract and amendment on its Medicaid Health Plans page. The Healthy Michigan Plan is Michigan’s Medicaid expansion coverage for low-income adults. MI Coordinated Health, a new program for people with both Medicare and Medicaid, launched January 1, 2026 in select counties, replacing MI Health Link, with statewide expansion planned for 2027 (MDHHS newsroom, Oct. 9, 2024).
Nine Medicaid health plans hold CHCP contracts that took effect October 1, 2024 and run through September 30, 2029 with three optional one-year extensions: Aetna Better Health of Michigan, Blue Cross Complete of Michigan, HAP CareSource, McLaren Health Plan, Meridian Health Plan of Michigan, Molina Healthcare of Michigan, Priority Health Choice, UnitedHealthcare Community Plan and Upper Peninsula Health Plan (MHA summary of the April 8, 2024 award; Meridian press release). Plans vary by county per the MDHHS ’Michigan Medicaid Health Plan Listed by County’ (updated 1-10-2025): Wayne County has eight plans (all except Upper Peninsula Health Plan); Kent has six (Blue Cross Complete, Molina, McLaren, Priority Health Choice, Meridian, UnitedHealthcare); Ingham has four (McLaren, UnitedHealthcare, Aetna, HAP CareSource); Washtenaw has six (Blue Cross Complete, McLaren, Meridian, UnitedHealthcare, Aetna, HAP CareSource); Genesee has six (Blue Cross Complete, Molina, McLaren, Meridian, UnitedHealthcare, HAP CareSource); Kalamazoo has four (McLaren, Meridian, UnitedHealthcare, Aetna); Alpena has four (Blue Cross Complete, Molina, McLaren, Priority Health Choice); Marquette and the rest of the Upper Peninsula have one (Upper Peninsula Health Plan).
