Book a VisitHow It WorksBlood work ordered during your visit can be drawn at TestSource Lab on Lovers Lane, a Quest-affiliated draw site in Kalamazoo, or at a hospital laboratory at Bronson Methodist Hospital or Beacon Kalamazoo. Tell us which is easier and whether your plan prefers Quest or Labcorp, and we route the order there. The next Quest-branded site is in Three Rivers, about 23 miles away, so most Kalamazoo and Portage patients use a hospital draw site.
Imaging such as X-rays, ultrasound, CT and MRI is scheduled through Bronson or Beacon; ask for the outpatient location nearest you. Prescriptions go electronically to the pharmacy you name. Southwest Michigan college and health-care city with two trauma centers, a single large federally qualified health center, and a Medicaid market that recently changed hands from Ascension to Beacon Health System.
Kalamazoo has two trauma centers, Bronson Methodist Hospital (Level I) and Beacon Kalamazoo (Level II, formerly Ascension Borgess), but HRSA designates the county’s low-income population as a primary care and mental health shortage area, and only four Medicaid health plans operate in the county. A video visit with Charles Wade, FNP-BC, covers primary care, mental health, ADHD, weight management, dermatology questions and urgent care for minor illness from home or campus.
He orders labs and imaging to be done in Kalamazoo and sends prescriptions to your pharmacy. Family Health Center, the county’s federally qualified health center, remains the sliding-fee choice for in-person care, and Kalamazoo County Health and Human Services runs public health programs.
HRSA designates the low-income population of Kalamazoo County as a primary care HPSA (score 14) and mental health HPSA (score 13); Family Health Center is an FQHC HPSA scoring 19 (primary care) and 17 (mental health). Only four Medicaid health plans are listed for Kalamazoo County (McLaren Health Plan, Meridian, UnitedHealthcare Community Plan, Aetna Better Health). ACS 2024 1-year: 6.3% uninsured; 5.0% of households with no internet subscription.
Telehealth suits Kalamazoo’s large student population, with Western Michigan University alone enrolling 17,331 students in fall 2025, as well as working adults and parents of children ages five and older who want consistent care for ADHD, anxiety, depression, blood pressure, diabetes, skin problems or weight. Students far from a home doctor can keep medications steady without starting over each semester, and anyone whose records sit under the old Borgess name can still be seen.
Go in person for physical exams, immunizations, procedures and anything that must be examined by hand. For chest pain, stroke symptoms, severe breathing trouble, serious injury, overdose or a safety crisis, call 911 or go to Bronson Methodist Hospital or Beacon Kalamazoo.
Medicaid: Michigan Medicaid is administered by the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS). Most beneficiaries are enrolled in managed care through the Comprehensive Health Care Program (CHCP); MDHHS posts the FY2026 CHCP contract and amendment on its Medicaid Health Plans page. The Healthy Michigan Plan is Michigan’s Medicaid expansion coverage for low-income adults. MI Coordinated Health, a new program for people with both Medicare and Medicaid, launched January 1, 2026 in select counties, replacing MI Health Link, with statewide expansion planned for 2027 (MDHHS newsroom, Oct. 9, 2024).
Nine Medicaid health plans hold CHCP contracts that took effect October 1, 2024 and run through September 30, 2029 with three optional one-year extensions: Aetna Better Health of Michigan, Blue Cross Complete of Michigan, HAP CareSource, McLaren Health Plan, Meridian Health Plan of Michigan, Molina Healthcare of Michigan, Priority Health Choice, UnitedHealthcare Community Plan and Upper Peninsula Health Plan (MHA summary of the April 8, 2024 award; Meridian press release). Plans vary by county per the MDHHS ’Michigan Medicaid Health Plan Listed by County’ (updated 1-10-2025): Wayne County has eight plans (all except Upper Peninsula Health Plan); Kent has six (Blue Cross Complete, Molina, McLaren, Priority Health Choice, Meridian, UnitedHealthcare); Ingham has four (McLaren, UnitedHealthcare, Aetna, HAP CareSource); Washtenaw has six (Blue Cross Complete, McLaren, Meridian, UnitedHealthcare, Aetna, HAP CareSource); Genesee has six (Blue Cross Complete, Molina, McLaren, Meridian, UnitedHealthcare, HAP CareSource); Kalamazoo has four (McLaren, Meridian, UnitedHealthcare, Aetna); Alpena has four (Blue Cross Complete, Molina, McLaren, Priority Health Choice); Marquette and the rest of the Upper Peninsula have one (Upper Peninsula Health Plan).
