Orders go local

Labs, imaging and pharmacies near Kalamazoo.

Blood work ordered during your visit can be drawn at TestSource Lab on Lovers Lane, a Quest-affiliated draw site in Kalamazoo, or at a hospital laboratory at Bronson Methodist Hospital or Beacon Kalamazoo. Tell us which is easier and whether your plan prefers Quest or Labcorp, and we route the order there. The next Quest-branded site is in Three Rivers, about 23 miles away, so most Kalamazoo and Portage patients use a hospital draw site.

Imaging such as X-rays, ultrasound, CT and MRI is scheduled through Bronson or Beacon; ask for the outpatient location nearest you. Prescriptions go electronically to the pharmacy you name. Walgreens has Kalamazoo stores, and Rite Aid closed all of its Michigan stores in 2024, so give us the exact store if yours moved.

Blood work

Bronson lists laboratory collection locations in Kalamazoo, including Bronson Diagnostics North Pavilion and Bronson Lab – Gull Road. Confirm the test, order acceptance, current hours and insurance network before visiting.

Pharmacies

Walgreens lists Kalamazoo in its Michigan store directory. Rite Aid closed all of its roughly 230 Michigan stores by late 2024.

Before you go, confirm the requested test, outside-order acceptance, insurance, collection fees and hours with the facility. These resources are examples, not a complete directory. Quest Location Finder · Labcorp Location Finder.

For chest pain, trouble breathing, stroke symptoms, severe bleeding, a major injury or thoughts of harming yourself, call 911 or go to the nearest emergency department rather than booking a video visit.

Are there community health centers in Kalamazoo for in-person care?

Family Health Center, Inc. (7 active Kalamazoo sites in HRSA data) serve the area with in-person primary care on a sliding scale. Many patients pair that kind of local clinic with telehealth for follow-ups, medication management and specialist coordination.

Michigan Medicaid plans are not on the participating list right now. Plans accepted in Michigan: BCBS / Anthem PPO, UnitedHealthcare PPO, UMR (PPO), Aetna PPO, Cigna PPO, Humana PPO, Ambetter PPO, TRICARE. Telehealth can complement local clinicians by offering another way to access primary care, mental health and medication follow-up while you keep your local relationships.

Can orders be sent to a laboratory or imaging facility near me?

When clinically appropriate, we can send orders to a laboratory or imaging facility you choose. Confirm that the location performs the requested test, accepts the order and participates in your insurance network. Availability and travel distance vary by community.

Good to know

Services, screening recommendations, testing, treatment options, referrals and prescribing may vary with your age, medical history, symptoms, where you are physically located at the time of the visit, state and federal requirements, insurance requirements, and whether your condition can be safely managed by telehealth. Conditions and services listed here are examples. An appointment does not guarantee a particular diagnosis, a prescription, a controlled medication, hormone therapy, a lab order, an imaging study, a sleep study, a specialist referral, an accommodation letter or a particular treatment. Treatment decisions follow a clinical evaluation and the provider’s judgment.

Getting care in Kalamazoo

Southwest Michigan college and health-care city with two trauma centers, a single large federally qualified health center, and a Medicaid market that recently changed hands from Ascension to Beacon Health System.

Kalamazoo has two trauma centers, Bronson Methodist Hospital (Level I) and Beacon Kalamazoo (Level II, formerly Ascension Borgess), but HRSA designates the county’s low-income population as a primary care and mental health shortage area, and only four Medicaid health plans operate in the county. A video visit with Charles Wade, FNP-BC, covers primary care, mental health, ADHD, weight management, dermatology questions and urgent care for minor illness from home or campus.

He orders labs and imaging to be done in Kalamazoo and sends prescriptions to your pharmacy. Family Health Center, the county’s federally qualified health center, remains the sliding-fee choice for in-person care, and Kalamazoo County Health and Human Services runs public health programs.

Access in Kalamazoo County

HRSA designates the low-income population of Kalamazoo County as a primary care HPSA (score 14) and mental health HPSA (score 13); Family Health Center is an FQHC HPSA scoring 19 (primary care) and 17 (mental health). Only four Medicaid health plans are listed for Kalamazoo County (McLaren Health Plan, Meridian, UnitedHealthcare Community Plan, Aetna Better Health). ACS 2024 1-year: 6.3% uninsured; 5.0% of households with no internet subscription.

Who this helps most in Kalamazoo

Telehealth suits Kalamazoo’s large student population, with Western Michigan University alone enrolling 17,331 students in fall 2025, as well as working adults and parents of children ages five and older who want consistent care for ADHD, anxiety, depression, blood pressure, diabetes, skin problems or weight. Students far from a home doctor can keep medications steady without starting over each semester, and anyone whose records sit under the old Borgess name can still be seen.

Go in person for physical exams, immunizations, procedures and anything that must be examined by hand. For chest pain, stroke symptoms, severe breathing trouble, serious injury, overdose or a safety crisis, call 911 or go to Bronson Methodist Hospital or Beacon Kalamazoo.

Local health considerations

  • Large student population: Western Michigan University in Kalamazoo enrolled 17,331 students in fall 2025.
  • Hospital ownership change: the former Ascension Borgess Hospital on Gull Road is now Beacon Kalamazoo (Beacon Health System), listed as a Level II trauma center as of September 1, 2026; patients may hold records under the old name.
  • Narrow Medicaid plan choice: four plans serve Kalamazoo County versus eight in Wayne County.
