Getting care in Covington

Kenton County’s largest city, a historic Northern Kentucky river city directly across the Ohio River from downtown Cincinnati, where much of the region’s specialty and trauma care sits on the Ohio side.

Covington sits a bridge away from Cincinnati, and a lot of its care works that way. St. Elizabeth Covington on James Simpson Jr Way has a 24-hour emergency department, but Kentucky’s trauma system lists no verified trauma center anywhere in Northern Kentucky, so serious trauma goes to UC Medical Center across the river. Mental Health is the tighter gap. HRSA designated north Kenton County a low-income mental health shortage area in February 2026, and the county has about 218 mental health providers per 100,000 residents against 301 for the region.

A video visit with Wade’s Care First, licensed in Kentucky, covers primary care, anxiety and depression, ADHD and weight management from a Covington address, with labs and prescriptions kept on the Kentucky side when you prefer.

Access in Kenton County

HRSA designated a low-income mental health HPSA for north Kenton County in Feb. 2026 (LI-Kenton County 1 North, score 19); HealthPoint Family Care carries FQHC HPSA scores of 19-22. Kenton Service Area has been a Medically Underserved Area since 1994. The Health Collaborative’s Kenton County profile reports 218 mental health providers per 100,000 residents, versus 301 for the region. TANK (Transit Authority of Northern Kentucky) runs buses across Boone, Campbell and Kenton counties and into downtown Cincinnati; Route 5 serves St. Elizabeth Covington on weekdays. The Northern Kentucky Health Department opened its new Kenton County Health Center on James Simpson Jr Way in November 2024.

Who this helps most in Covington

Kenton County has one of the lowest uninsured rates in Kentucky, under 4 percent of working-age adults by CDC PLACES estimates, so the barrier here is usually time, not coverage. Telehealth fits commuters who work in downtown Cincinnati and cannot reach a Kentucky clinic during business hours, parents in Latonia or Peaselburg handling a child’s ADHD or school concerns, and adults who want depression or anxiety care in a county short on therapists and prescribers.

Older residents of the river neighborhoods can keep blood pressure and diabetes follow-up on schedule without parking hunts. Go in person for chest pain, stroke symptoms, serious injury or a mental health crisis; call 911 or go to St. Elizabeth Covington’s emergency department.

Local health considerations

  • Chronic disease: CDC PLACES (2024 release; 2021–2022 survey data; crude modeled estimates) estimates Kenton County adult diabetes at 11.7%, obesity 34.7% and depression 26.3%; 3.9% of adults 18-64 are uninsured, among the lowest in Kentucky.
  • Mental Health: new low-income mental health HPSA for north Kenton County (HRSA, 2026); 218 mental health providers per 100,000 vs. 301 regionally.
  • Trauma: no verified trauma center in Northern Kentucky; adult Level I care is at UC Medical Center in Cincinnati.
