Getting care in Fort Myers

Southwest Gulf Coast county seat with a median age of 42.8, a large retiree and seasonal population, and Lee Health, a community-focused nonprofit health system.

Fort Myers and Cape Coral residents can use a video visit with Charles Wade, FNP-BC, for primary care, mental health, ADHD, weight management, sleep, skin concerns and minor urgent problems, with labs, imaging and prescriptions sent to Lee County locations you choose. Lee Health runs the area’s hospitals, including Lee Memorial downtown, Gulf Coast Medical Center, HealthPark and Cape Coral Hospital, and those remain the right places for emergencies and procedures.

Since Hurricane Ian, many people here have changed homes, clinicians and pharmacies; telehealth gives you one consistent point of contact that does not depend on which bridge is open or how far you have moved from your old office.

Access in Lee County

Florida’s uninsured rate for people under 65 was 13.6% in 2024 versus 9.8% nationally (KFF, ACS 1-year); all-ages uninsured was 10.9%, ranking 45th among states (America’s Health Rankings, ACS 2024). As of January 1, 2026, Florida had 320 primary care HPSAs and 239 mental health HPSAs, and would need 1,434 more primary care practitioners and 545 more mental health practitioners to eliminate them (Florida Senate analysis of SB 1480, 2026). Hurricane season continuity: during qualifying emergencies, ask your pharmacist and insurer about early refills under Florida law; authorized refills and other coverage requirements still apply.

Who this helps most in Fort Myers

This helps Fort Myers and Cape Coral retirees who want medication review and chronic-disease follow-up without driving, seasonal residents who need continuity while in Florida, working families in Lehigh Acres or Estero with long commutes, and anyone whose previous clinician relocated after Ian. It also suits people managing anxiety, depression, ADHD or weight who prefer private video visits. Go in person for physical exams, injuries, wound care or same-hour imaging; Family Health Centers or a local urgent care can help.

Call 911 or go to a Lee Health emergency department, such as Gulf Coast Medical Center or Cape Coral Hospital, for chest pain, stroke symptoms, severe breathing trouble, serious falls or any crisis involving risk of self-harm.

Local health considerations

  • Hurricane Ian (September 2022) made landfall near Cayo Costa as a Category 4 storm with 10-15 ft storm surge; 72 of Florida’s 149 confirmed direct deaths were in Lee County. Keep a written medication list and at least a 30-day supply during hurricane season (F.S. 252.358 requires insurers to allow early refills under warnings or emergency orders).
  • Fort Myers’ median age is 42.8 (ACS 2024) with a large retiree population, so medication reconciliation, fall prevention and chronic-disease monitoring are central.
  • Heat: NWS flags older adults, especially those living alone or on certain medications, as highest risk; summer humidity on the Gulf Coast raises that risk.
