Arizona’s capital and the fifth-largest U.S. city, the core of a fast-growing desert metro with extreme summer heat.
Phoenix sits at the center of a county of about 4.7 million people, and Maricopa County still needs roughly 226 more primary care physicians just to erase its federally designated shortage. In practice that means long waits for a new-patient appointment, especially if you want one clinician to manage several things at once. A video visit with Wade’s Care First lets you handle routine primary care, mental health follow-up, ADHD management, weight care and many urgent concerns from home or a break room, without a drive across the Valley in summer heat. When something needs hands-on care, most of Arizona’s Level I trauma hospitals are in this metro, including Banner – University Medical Center Phoenix, St. Joseph’s and Valleywise Health.
Maricopa County needs an estimated 225.6 additional primary care physician FTEs and 40.5 psychiatrist FTEs to eliminate its HRSA shortage designations, the largest gaps in the state. Heat is a documented public health emergency: the county identified 430 heat-related deaths in 2025 (608 in 2024; 645 in 2023); 49% of 2025 victims were experiencing homelessness and 74% died outdoors. Arizona’s uninsured rate was 10.3% in 2024 (U.S. 8.2%), and 9.3% of Arizona children were uninsured in 2024, second-highest in the nation.
Telehealth fits Phoenix residents who work long shifts, lack reliable transportation, care for kids or aging parents, or simply cannot get a timely appointment. It works well for refills, anxiety and depression, ADHD, blood pressure and thyroid management, skin concerns, sleep problems and weight-loss planning. It is not the right choice for chest pain, stroke symptoms, serious injuries, trouble breathing, or confusion after time in the heat; call 911 or go to the nearest emergency department.
Heat is a real local risk: Maricopa County counted 430 heat-related deaths in 2025, most of them outdoors. If you stop sweating, feel faint or have a very high temperature after being outside, treat it as an emergency, not a video visit.
Medicaid: Arizona’s Medicaid agency is AHCCCS (Arizona Health Care Cost Containment System). Most members are enrolled in AHCCCS Complete Care (ACC) managed care plans that integrate physical and behavioral health. ACC-RBHA plans add regional behavioral health responsibilities (Arizona Complete Health for the North and South service areas; Mercy Care for the Central area). The Arizona Long Term Care System (ALTCS) covers long-term care (UnitedHealthcare, Banner – University Family Care, Mercy Care Plan, and DES/DDD). American Indian members may choose the fee-for-service American Indian Health Program (AIHP) and receive care at IHS, tribally operated and urban Indian facilities; Navajo Nation, Hopi, White Mountain Apache, Gila River and other tribes also run tribal contractors and Tribal RBHAs. Mercy Care administers the DCS Comprehensive Health Plan for children in foster care.
AHCCCS Complete Care plans (AHCCCS health plan list revised 2026-06-30): Arizona Complete Health – Complete Care Plan (statewide except Pinal ZIPs 85542/85192/85550, which it also covers as a separate area); Banner – University Family Care (Maricopa, Pinal, Cochise, Gila, Graham, Greenlee, La Paz, Pima, Santa Cruz, Yuma); Molina Healthcare (Maricopa, Gila, Pinal); Mercy Care (Maricopa, Gila, Pinal); Blue Cross Blue Shield of Arizona Health Choice (Apache, Coconino, Mohave, Navajo, Yavapai, Maricopa, Gila, Pinal); UnitedHealthcare Community Plan (Maricopa, Gila, Pima, Pinal). Note: Care1st no longer appears on the 2026 ACC list.
